| Ruark the Hunter, as we remember him |
This page features three Ruark photos as many remember him. Legions of fans think of him as pictured on this page, wearing his recognizable hunter's hat. These three photos bring back memories of his articles many read in magazines while waiting for a haircut at the barber shop, for example. They represent the old man's boy who grew up and went to sea, became a journalist, went to Africa and became known as North Carolina's most favous writer about hunting. Some think of Ruark as the poor man's Hemingway.
Others, who think of him today, picture him as he appears in the illustration made famous by Dwane Powell. Therefore, we have used Powell's illustrations several times on this site. For many, Powell's illustration is their mental picture of Robert Ruark.
Still others think of his profile photo, found on the far right of your screen; his wind-blown hair and that gigantic smile as if he's greeting a good friend after a long absence.
We hope to find photos of Bobby in New York at the 21 Club, where he often met with Jerry Berns and others. We'd also like photos of him at the Ambassador East Hotel in Chicago or dining at The Pump Room there. Please feel free to share your Ruark photos with the Robert Ruark Society. Those places became well known to his readers through his novel The Honey Badger. He was a regular at both places.
